Chapter Twenty

Raj was nervous. Which, by itself, was bad enough. He didn’t like being nervous. But he was also a bit scared. Just a little. Which made him even more nervous.

“You don’t have to do this, I guess. We can wait. I mean, I could be flying soon enough.” Quill gave him a tight-lipped smile as he handed him the folded-up parchment paper.

Soon enough? Does he really think he can learn to fly in a matter of days? When he’s still so weak? Silly man. Raj quickly tucked the letter in his pocket. “No, it’s fine. If Vance wants to kill me on the spot, I can’t say I blame him. I need to take my medicine.”

Now Quill was rolling his eyes. “Don’t be so dramatic. This is a friendly visit. I wish I could go. I just, well, I don’t want my wings to pop out and possibly hurt someone. Or destroy Benji’s house. It’s also still too soon after the incident at the main headquarters for me to show my face around Vance. Can’t chance him getting in trouble because of me. That is, if he isn’t already knee-deep in shit.” He handed Raj another scrap of paper, this one with an address scrawled on it in Quill’s big, looping handwriting.

“You’re sure this is right?”

“Of course.” Quill placed his hands on his small hips and lifted his chin. “Memorizing addresses was key to the job. Vance told me where Benji lives so of course I remember. Be nice to Benji. He seems like a good guy.”

Raj swallowed dryly and nodded. Paying a call on Vance was bad enough: he knew the guy hated his guts. But now he had to meet the man’s partner, a stranger, in his own house at that? And if Vance wasn’t there, if he had been arrested, Raj would have to spend even more time with this Benji guy so he could help Vance. Because whether Vance liked him or not didn’t matter: Raj owed him.

Before he could voice any more questions, Quill kissed his cheek and swatted at his ass. “Go on, then! Don’t leave me and the kid alone for too long. We might build an army and come after you. An army of fire snails.” His thick lips gave a playful smile that was contagious. Raj felt his own mouth tug upwards as he stretched his wings and flew up and out into the sunlight.

The world was crisp and sparkling after last night’s rain. The early morning air was cooler than he had expected. Should have brought a jacket. Oh well. Eying the horizon, Raj turned in the direction of Porterville. It was further away than Tarja City, but it was near the sea, which was a bonus.

Raj had always loved the sea. Had always dreamed about boarding a boat and sailing off into the horizon. Discovering new islands. New lands with their own natural wonders.

Unfortunately, the government guarded the ports more closely than they did the mines. Using the
